Microphone test

When you press Start, the browser asks whether to allow the microphone. After you allow it, go through the stay-quiet and speak steps to check the input signal and clipping. The microphone is not used before you press Start.

Everything is measured inside this page. The measured values and results are not sent, saved or recorded.

Measure

The microphone sound is used only to measure the input level. It is analysed inside this page and discarded right away; it is not recorded, saved or sent.

Once the microphone is on, the level of the sound coming in is shown here.

Criteria used

These are the criteria this test applies. The values and the basis come from the same table the test judges with.

Item Criterion Value Basis
No input signal Minimum speaking time JikCheck initial criterion 3,000 ms Internal criterion: the minimum length of the speaking step. An initial assumption taken as the time it takes to say one short sentence.
No input signal Peak level treated as no input JikCheck initial criterion -60 dBFS Internal criterion: an initial assumption that if the highest level while speaking is below this value, almost no input is arriving.
No input signal Floor used to record digital silence Measurement definition JikCheck initial criterion -100 dBFS Internal criterion: the recorded value for digital silence. A window whose samples are all zero has a level of negative infinity, which cannot be compared as a number, so any level at or below this value is recorded as this value. It is set lower than one step of a 16-bit sample (about -90.3 dBFS) and well below the highest-level criterion for judging no input, so digital silence is judged as no input.
Input too loud (clipping) Minimum speaking time JikCheck initial criterion 3,000 ms Internal criterion: the minimum length of the speaking step. An initial assumption taken as the time it takes to say one short sentence.
Input too loud (clipping) Clipped share that calls for a check JikCheck initial criterion 1 % Internal criterion: if the share of clipped samples (samples stuck at full scale; defined in the measurement-definition row of the criteria table) among the samples of the speaking step exceeds this value, advice that the input volume is high is shown.
Input too loud (clipping) Sample size counted as clipped Measurement definition JikCheck initial criterion 99.9 % Internal criterion: the definition of a clipped sample. A sample whose absolute value relative to full scale is at least this value is counted as clipped. The maximum code of a 16-bit device is 32767/32768 ≈ 0.99997 and so never reaches exactly full scale; the value is therefore set just below full scale.

How to use and FAQ

How do I use the microphone test?

Press Start microphone and allow the permission the browser asks for. Measure the background sound with Stay quiet, then speak for a few seconds in Speak and press I spoke. Choose Show result to see the highest level while you spoke and the clipping ratio next to their criteria.

The permission prompt did not appear, or I denied it.

Allow this site's microphone in the site settings next to the address bar, then press Start again. The microphone access of the browser may also be switched off in the privacy settings of the operating system.

What do the level values mean?

dBFS is a size measured against the maximum of the digital signal (0). The closer to 0, the louder; the smaller the value, the quieter. If the highest level while you spoke is below the criterion, “No input signal” is marked “Check needed”; if the share of samples cut off at the maximum is above the criterion, clipping is marked “Check needed”.

Is the result proof for an exchange or warranty claim?

No. The result is a reference measurement calculated from signals your browser receives. Follow the seller’s or manufacturer’s rules for exchange and repair.
